Bathroom Tile Remodeling in Avon, CT

Bathroom tile remodels in Avon's colonials and contemporary estates, where a bigger room now holds a builder-grade bath that was never meant to last.

Bathroom tile in Avon

The median year Avon's housing went up is 1979, and where a bathroom is in a newer house the tile usually goes on drywall rather than plaster.

Only 425 of Avon's housing units date from 1939 or earlier, and in one of those houses the wall behind is often plaster over lath.

The Pine Grove nomination calls its farmhouses two-story and clapboarded with pitched roofs, so where a bathroom is in one the wall behind may be wood siding.

About 71.9% of Avon's housing units are detached houses, and a bathroom in one of them is usually set inside the building itself.

Avon's building department is at 60 West Main Street, and where a bathroom needs a permit the application is usually filed through the town's OpenGov portal.

An Avon bathroom is about 27 minutes from our base, and the quote goes out once the room is measured.

Bath Remodel · Avon

Avon bathrooms: newer houses, bigger rooms, and a builder-grade bath that was never meant to last.

So the problems we fix in Avon are mostly two things. The tub surround is a molded unit or a cheap fiber-cement board that was never properly waterproofed, and it has been leaking slowly behind the tile for a decade, which is why so many Avon floors near the tub feel soft when you press them. And the floor itself is often a small-format tile laid directly on the subfloor with no waterproofing at all, so the same water reaches the framing every time the shower runs.

We rebuild that properly. The pan comes out, the subfloor gets opened and rebuilt if it is soft, a bonded waterproofing system goes down as its own layer, and only then does tile get set. With a flood test before anything is closed up. Avon is about twenty-seven minutes from our base, one of the further towns on the route, and these jobs are planned in advance rather than squeezed in. You get a written day-by-day schedule at the estimate.

Avon is not an old-house town. Eighty-five percent of its homes are owner-occupied, the median house was built in 1979, and fewer than one in six predate 1960. What that means for a bathroom is not plaster walls and sagging joists. It is large suburban primary baths, split-level and colonial layouts with a bathroom the builder ran through in a week. Good enough to sell the house. Not built to still look good years later.

Not sure how much of this your home needs? Start here: the seven things that move the price of a bathroom remodel It takes five minutes and saves guessing.

In Avon we remodel bathrooms in porcelain, mosaic and natural stone tile, on full height, wainscot and niche layouts, and we manage the tile side of the job end to end.

What we check before quoting an Avon bathroom

Is there soft floor near the tub?

We press the floor along the tub edge and check for deflection. In an Avon ranch or colonial that has been leaking behind the surround for years, the subfloor under the tile is often spongy. That gets rebuilt before anything new goes down, or the new bathroom fails the same way.

What is the surround built on?

Fiber-cement board, a molded plastic unit, or a tiled-over wall. Each one has to come off before anything can be tiled to it. We check what is actually behind the tile at the estimate rather than finding out after demo.

Large-format tile and level floor

Avon primary baths are big rooms, and big tile needs a flatter floor than small tile does. We level the substrate and set large-format with clips so a 24-inch tile does not read as a wavy surface across a large room.

Permits in Avon

Does this work need a permit?

Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bathroom Tile Remodeling in Avon: Questions

No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.

It usually means water has been getting behind the tile and the subfloor underneath has started to break down. It needs to come up and be rebuilt. You cannot tile over it and hope. We open the area, rebuild the base flat and sound, waterproof it, and flood-test before we close anything up.

For tile, a new vanity and a countertop, no. That finish work is exempt under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code. If we move a drain, add a valve or run new wiring, those trades are permitted separately, filed through the Town of Avon Building Department at 60 West Main Street, open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30. We tell you which parts of your scope need a permit before work starts.

The wet area has to be sealed off during demo and waterproofing. That is not negotiable, because you cannot dry a room that is still getting wet. Everything else is phased so the rest of the house carries on, and we never leave you overnight without a working toilet. If you have small children or a working-from-home schedule, tell us and we plan around it.

A 1-year written workmanship warranty on every install. We are a registered and insured Connecticut contractor. CT HIC #0706534, verifiable through the state HIC lookup, and we are rated five stars on Google. Estimates are free, and we will tell you honestly if your bathroom is not a good fit for what we do.

Yes, and it is the most common conversion we do. If the plumbing stays where it is, we can usually convert without moving a drain, which is the single biggest cost driver in a bathroom. We will tell you at the estimate whether your layout allows it or whether the drain has to move.

We build the pan, then go over it with a bonded waterproofing membrane such as a Schluter-KERDI style sheet or a liquid-applied one where the geometry calls for it. The membrane runs over the pan, up the walls, around the curb, and over every seam, corner and valve penetration, and we hold a twenty-four-hour flood test before any tile goes down. If a drop moves, we find it while it is still inexpensive to fix.

Only sometimes, and only when the old tile passes the checks: solidly bonded everywhere when you tap it, flat, and structurally sound, with enough give at the outlets, counters and doors to absorb the added thickness. When it fails any of those, tiling over it locks the problem in. On a wet area we almost always take it down to the substrate instead.
