Daniel did some tile work for me and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Absolutely amazing work and craftsmanship. He showed up on time, was very professional throughout the whole job, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he takes pride in his work and pays attention to the little details. Good, reliable contractors aren’t always easy to find, and Daniel is definitely one of them. The quality of the work was excellent, everything was done right, and he was worth every penny. I will definitely use him again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality tile work. Highly recommend! Daniel, thank you so much for getting the job done on short notice.

Custom Tile · Avon
Avon: custom tile to a designer's drawing
A lot of Avon's housing has been renovated with a designer or architect involved, and our custom work here is often installing to someone else's drawing: a bookmatched porcelain slab wall behind a freestanding tub, a limestone floor through a foyer and powder room, a chevron floor in a contemporary on Woodford Hill, a fireplace surround in large-format stone. The brief is precision: even joints, matched veins, mitered outside corners, no lippage.
That level of finish is a substrate problem before it is a tile problem. Large-format tile and slab need a wall or floor that is truly flat; natural stone floors need stiffer framing than porcelain does; mitered edges need a saw that cuts them cleanly and a layout that puts them where they are seen. We handle all three, and we talk directly to your designer about layout, grout and edge details before anything is ordered. Avon is about twenty-seven minutes from our base, so we schedule installation in full-day blocks.

In Avon we install custom mosaic, zellige, hexagon, penny and hand-painted tile, on one-off patterns and feature surfaces, set by hand.

Custom work in Avon: what we settle first
Layout drawing and vein direction
For slab and large-format work we produce or review a layout showing each piece, the vein direction and the bookmatch, and we confirm it with you or your designer before cutting.
Stone requirements
Natural stone needs the stiffer L/720 floor, a white thin-set, sealing before grout, and a maintenance plan you are comfortable with; we explain that plainly and offer porcelain alternatives where they suit better.
Edges and returns
Mitered corners, metal profiles or a matching bullnose: we agree the edge treatment for every outside corner and every place tile meets another material before the first cut.
Permits in Avon
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Custom Tile Installation in Avon: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Yes, and we prefer it. We review the drawing for buildability (where cuts fall, whether the substrate can be made flat enough, how edges terminate), raise any issues with the designer before ordering, and install to the approved plan. We are comfortable being one trade in a larger renovation team.
Yes. Slabs are templated, laid out for the match, cut with a rail saw and set with a medium-bed mortar on a wall flattened to 1/8 inch in 10 feet. The seam is planned to fall on the visual center, and the panels are handled with suction frames. It is a two-person, full-day job per wall, and there is no second attempt, so the planning is thorough.
It can be, with realistic expectations. Honed limestone and marble mark and etch; they need sealing and gentle cleaners. Quartzite and some granites are harder. If you want the look with less care, marble-look and limestone-look porcelain has become very convincing, and we will show both on your floor before you decide.
No. Tiling and finish work not involving structural changes or alterations is exempt under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code. Plumbing or electrical elements of the project are permitted by those trades through the Avon Building Department at 60 West Main Street. If a stone floor requires stiffening the framing, that is structural work and we advise on it first.
