Bathroom Tile Remodeling in East Hampton, CT
Bathroom tile remodels in East Hampton, CT. A third of the houses out here date from the 1970s and 80s, and most bathrooms in them have not been touched since. We gut the room, rebuild the subfloor and pan properly, and put the tile back so it outlives the next owner.
Bathroom tile in East Hampton
81% of East Hampton's housing is detached, and where a bathroom is in one of those houses the room is usually worked on its own.
About 14% of East Hampton's housing was built before 1940, and in an older house a bathroom wall often decides the plan.
East Hampton relies mostly on private wells, and where a bathroom is in a well house the water line and the drain usually need a look first.
Most Middle Haddam buildings are wood-frame and one to two stories, and where a bathroom sits in one the framing often shows its age.
East Hampton building permits go through PermitLink, and where a bathroom needs one the application goes to the Building Department at 1 Community Drive.
An East Hampton bathroom is about 35 minutes from our Lincoln Street base, so where a room is measured the quote is often written the same week.

Bath Remodel · East Hampton
East Hampton bathrooms fail from the floor up, not the tile down.
So we open it up before we price it. The floor gets checked for movement, the pan gets looked at, and the walls get an actual look at what is behind the tile. We measure the room after demo and price any substrate work before tile is ordered, which is the only way the estimate you sign ends up being the estimate you pay.
East Hampton is about thirty-five minutes from our base in New Britain on the I-91 run, and the drive time is why we can get out here for the small jobs as well as the whole-room ones. Wells and septic are normal in this town, so we plan around what is already in the ground rather than assuming a municipal line is somewhere it isn't.
Five and a half thousand homes in East Hampton, and the median one was built in 1977. Just over a quarter of them went up before 1960, and a good number of those are Middle Haddam colonials with plaster over lath instead of plasterboard. That mix decides the job: a 1970s ranch bathroom gets a strip-out and a clean build, a Middle Haddam original gets the framing opened and measured before anyone orders tile.

In East Hampton we remodel bathrooms in porcelain, mosaic and natural stone tile, on full height, wainscot and niche layouts, and we manage the tile side of the job end to end.

Before a bathroom is closed up again in East Hampton
What is under the subfloor?
On a 1970s ranch the joists are usually full dimension and fine. In an older Middle Haddam house the floor can be a patchwork of repairs across three owners. We check movement under load, open anything that looks soft, and level it before a single tile is ordered.
Where does the water actually go?
The pan is the part that decides whether this bathroom lasts. We build a sloped pan with a bonded membrane, carry it up the walls, seal every pipe penetration, and flood test it before tile goes on. Code asks for 15 minutes (IRC P2503.6). We hold it 24 hours, because that is what the manufacturer asks for and because it is the last chance to see a leak before it is behind tile.
How close are we to anything?
East Hampton has inland wetlands and the Lake Pocotopaug watershed, which we check before we plan, and Middle Haddam is a local historic district with its own rules. We design to those from the first measurement rather than finding out after the tile is on the wall.
Permits in East Hampton
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Bathroom Tile Remodeling in East Hampton: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Usually, yes, and here is why. A typical 1970s East Hampton ranch bathroom is a tub surround over a mortar bed or direct to board. With a pan that was never really waterproofed. You can tile over it, but you will be doing it again in a few years. If the pan is sound and the framing is straight, we can sometimes keep the surround and rebuild the floor only, and we will tell you honestly which one yours is before you commit.
A standard five by eight with a tub surround, floor and one vanity wall is typically six to nine working days including waterproofing and cure times, and that is before any glass or custom tile. Tile work runs on cure time as well as labour, so the shower is not ready the day we finish setting tile. You get a written schedule at the estimate so you know exactly which days we need the room.
Yes, and the Middle Haddam Historic District has its own rules, so we design to them from the first measurement. A layout that does not pass review is a layout that costs you twice, so that conversation happens before tile is ordered, not after.
The same 1-year written workmanship warranty as the rest of our work. Dmtilellc is a CT registered home improvement contractor, HIC #0706534, and insured. Free written estimates, and we will tell you honestly if your project is not a good fit for what we do.
We build the pan, then go over it with a bonded waterproofing membrane such as a Schluter-KERDI style sheet or a liquid-applied one where the geometry calls for it. The membrane runs over the pan, up the walls, around the curb, and over every seam, corner and valve penetration, and we hold a twenty-four-hour flood test before any tile goes down. If a drop moves, we find it while it is still inexpensive to fix.
Only sometimes, and only when the old tile passes the checks: solidly bonded everywhere when you tap it, flat, and structurally sound, with enough give at the outlets, counters and doors to absorb the added thickness. When it fails any of those, tiling over it locks the problem in. On a wet area we almost always take it down to the substrate instead.
