Bathroom Tile Remodeling in Wethersfield, CT
Bathroom tile remodels in Wethersfield, where half the homes were built before 1960, from Old Wethersfield's antiques to the post-war capes and ranches around the Silas Deane Highway and the Cove.
Bathroom tile in Wethersfield
Wethersfield's historic district was set up in 1962 and holds more than 150 structures from before 1850, so a bathroom there is usually measured as it stands.
The town handbook lists interior alterations among the work that needs no Commission action, so where a bathroom is inside the district the tile work usually goes ahead.
Wethersfield's housing is old in part, 20% of it built before 1940, and where a bathroom is in an older house the framing often sets the plan.
14% of Wethersfield's occupied homes are in larger buildings, five units or more, and where a bathroom is in one it is done a floor at a time.
A Wethersfield bathroom permit goes to the Building Department at 505 Silas Deane Highway, and where one is filed it is read after the payment.
A Wethersfield bathroom is about 20 minutes away from the Lincoln Street base, so a room that gets measured usually gets a plan drawn before work is booked.

Bath Remodel · Wethersfield
Wethersfield bathrooms: post-war capes, and the oldest houses we work in
Half of Wethersfield's homes were built before 1960, and the bathroom we remodel most here came with them: a five-by-eight room in a post-war cape or ranch with a cast-iron tub, four-by-four tile on a mortar bed to chair-rail height, a mosaic floor and one small window. The owners want a brighter room with a real shower, and the house, with its solid framing and plaster walls, can take it once the mortar bed is out.
Old Wethersfield adds a different challenge. Houses in the historic district date from the 1700s and 1800s, and the bathroom was usually carved out of a bedroom or a back hall a century after the house went up. Floors are out of level, nothing is plumb, and the goal is tile that looks settled in the house rather than dropped into it. Historic-district review covers exterior changes only, so an interior remodel needs no design approval. We are about twenty minutes away.

In Wethersfield we remodel bathrooms in porcelain, mosaic and natural stone tile, on full height, wainscot and niche layouts, and we manage the tile side of the job end to end.

Wethersfield walkthrough notes
Mortar-bed walls to chair-rail height
The classic 1950s surround stops at four feet with a bullnose cap. Extending the tile to the ceiling means removing the bed, furring the studs flat and adding cement board, planned as part of demo and not discovered mid-job.
Cast-iron tubs and small doorways
A cast-iron tub in a cape bathroom may not fit out the door in one piece. We plan the removal (and whether it is broken up on site) before scheduling, because it affects the day count and the protection needed in the hall.
Antique-house floors
In Old Wethersfield we expect out-of-level floors and wide-board subfloors. We add a proper plywood layer and an uncoupling membrane, and we lay out the tile to follow the room's true lines rather than fight them.
Permits in Wethersfield
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Wethersfield moved building permits to a new online system (City Squared is no longer used); Old Wethersfield's historic district has its own design review for exterior work. Interior tile is unaffected.

Bathroom Tile Remodeling in Wethersfield: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Yes. It is the natural upgrade for this housing stock. The tub alcove becomes a tiled shower with a bonded waterproofing system and either a low curb or, if the joists allow it, a curbless entry. Moving the floor tile under a smaller vanity and using larger-format wall tile makes a five-by-eight room read much bigger.
Yes, and they are planned differently: we assume out-of-level floors, plaster walls and framing that moves with the seasons, and we choose materials and layouts that tolerate it: an uncoupling membrane on the floor, a bonded membrane on the walls, movement joints at the corners, and tile formats that do not telegraph every irregularity.
Porcelain for the floor, with a matte or textured finish rated for wet areas, and porcelain or ceramic on the walls. For grout we recommend a high-performance cementitious grout with a sealer or an epoxy grout on the floor and in the shower, and silicone rather than grout at every corner and at the tub or pan line.
Tile, vanities and countertops are exempt from a building permit under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code when nothing structural changes. A new valve, a changed drain or added electrical needs a trade permit from the Wethersfield Building Department at 505 Silas Deane Highway, now filed through the town's online permit system. Historic-district review applies to exterior work only.
We build the pan, then go over it with a bonded waterproofing membrane such as a Schluter-KERDI style sheet or a liquid-applied one where the geometry calls for it. The membrane runs over the pan, up the walls, around the curb, and over every seam, corner and valve penetration, and we hold a twenty-four-hour flood test before any tile goes down. If a drop moves, we find it while it is still inexpensive to fix.
Only sometimes, and only when the old tile passes the checks: solidly bonded everywhere when you tap it, flat, and structurally sound, with enough give at the outlets, counters and doors to absorb the added thickness. When it fails any of those, tiling over it locks the problem in. On a wet area we almost always take it down to the substrate instead.
