Shower Tile · New Britain
Tiling showers in the Hardware City's older housing
Most showers we tile in New Britain start life as a tub alcove in a house that pre-dates the idea of a walk-in shower. The typical bathroom in a Broad Street three-decker or a Walnut Hill colonial has a cast-iron tub in a shallow alcove, four-by-four mortar-bed tile to about chest height, and a window inside the wet area. A new tiled shower here is as much a carpentry and layout job as a tile job: furring the studs flat, deciding what happens to the window, getting a glass panel to land on a straight, plumb curb.
In the downtown condo conversions and the houses built since the 1980s, the shower is usually a fiberglass unit on drywall, and the job is a clean cut-out and rebuild on cement board with a bonded membrane.
Either way we lay the tile out on paper first. Full tiles at eye level, cuts hidden low, niches centered on the grid. With our base six minutes away we can bring a sample board to your bathroom before you commit.

In New Britain we set porcelain, ceramic, mosaic, glass and natural stone shower tile, on an offset layout, stacked, brick-set or herringbone, over a bonded waterproofing system.

What decides the design in a New Britain shower
The window in the wet wall
Common in pre-1960 baths. Options are a tiled, sloped sill with a solid-surface cap and a vinyl or fiberglass window; a smaller, higher window; or glass block. We price each rather than defaulting to the one that is easiest for us.
Out-of-plumb studs
Old framing is rarely plumb. Large-format wall tile needs the substrate within an eighth of an inch in ten feet, so we shim and fur the studs before cement board, otherwise the grout lines show every wobble.
Stacked apartments
In a two- or three-family, a shower over another unit gets the pan flood-tested for 24 hours and a membrane extended out onto the bathroom floor. If it ever leaks, it should show at the drain, not in the neighbor's ceiling.
Permits in New Britain
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Shower Tile Installation in New Britain: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Yes. It is the obvious conversion in this housing stock. The 60-by-30-inch alcove takes a tiled shower with a low curb and a glass panel; if the joists allow it, the pan can be recessed for a curbless entry. The drain generally moves from the tub location to the center or a linear drain at the back wall, which is work for your plumber under a plumbing permit.
Larger wall tile (12×24 or bigger) with few grout lines makes a small shower look calmer and is easier to clean, but it demands flat walls, which is why we fur the studs first. On the shower floor, 2-inch mosaic or a textured 4-inch tile gives the slope to the drain and the grip you need.
For a tub-to-shower conversion in an older home, count on about four to six working days from demolition to a shower you can use: demo and substrate repair, plumber's rough-in, waterproofing with a flood test, two to three days of tile, then grout and silicone. Silicone needs a day to cure before the first shower.
Tile itself is exempt from a building permit under the state code. Moving the drain or replacing the valve is plumbing work that your plumber permits through the City of New Britain's Department of Licenses, Permits and Inspections at 27 West Main Street; adding a light or fan is the same for the electrician. We coordinate the timing so inspections do not hold up the tile.
We build the pan, then go over it with a bonded waterproofing membrane such as a Schluter-KERDI style sheet or a liquid-applied one where the geometry calls for it. The membrane runs over the pan, up the walls, around the curb, and over every seam, corner and valve penetration, and we hold a twenty-four-hour flood test before any tile goes down. If a drop moves, we find it while it is still inexpensive to fix.
Only sometimes, and only when the old tile passes the checks: solidly bonded everywhere when you tap it, flat, and structurally sound, with enough give at the outlets, counters and doors to absorb the added thickness. When it fails any of those, tiling over it locks the problem in. On a wet area we almost always take it down to the substrate instead.
