Kitchen Backsplash Installation in New Britain, CT
Kitchen backsplashes installed straight and cut clean in New Britain's plaster-walled three-deckers, post-war capes and updated downtown condos, six minutes from our base.
Kitchen backsplash in New Britain
9,533 of New Britain's homes were built before 1940, and where we open a wall in one of them we usually find plaster over lath rather than drywall.
The Walnut Hill District record describes brick and concrete with brownstone ornament, so a kitchen there often sits against an old brick wall.
2,932 housing units in New Britain sit in buildings of 50 or more, where the kitchen work is often scheduled around the neighbors.
New Britain's tap water comes from the Shuttle Meadow plant, and in drought the city can switch to the Nepaug Reservoir, so the supply can change.
Where a permit is needed in New Britain it goes to the Department of Licenses at 27 West Main Street, Room 404, and the city takes it online.
We are about 6 minutes from our base on Lincoln Street, so a New Britain backsplash is usually measured and quoted in the same week it is called.

Daniel did some tile work for me and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Absolutely amazing work and craftsmanship. He showed up on time, was very professional throughout the whole job, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he takes pride in his work and pays attention to the little details. Good, reliable contractors aren’t always easy to find, and Daniel is definitely one of them. The quality of the work was excellent, everything was done right, and he was worth every penny. I will definitely use him again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality tile work. Highly recommend! Daniel, thank you so much for getting the job done on short notice.

Backsplashes on New Britain's old walls
A backsplash is the one tile job where the wall itself is the challenge, and New Britain has old walls. Kitchens in the Broad Street and Walnut Hill three-deckers and the East Street colonials have plaster over wood lath, patched around every generation's cabinets, and it is rarely flat or plumb. Set tile straight onto that wall and the pattern drifts, the grout lines wander, and the last course under the upper cabinets tapers from a full tile to a sliver.
So the work starts before the tile: a straightedge across the wall, the high spots knocked down, the low spots filled, and a level line snapped for the first course. Because so many New Britain homes are two- and three-family houses, a lot of our backsplashes go into rental kitchens between tenants: durable, easy to clean, done in a day or two. In owner kitchens the brief is usually the reverse: a hand-made zellige, a herringbone or a full-height slab-look panel behind the range that becomes the room's focal point.
Not sure how much of this your home needs? Start here: how to choose a grout color that ages well It takes five minutes and saves guessing.
In New Britain we install subway, herringbone, chevron, zellige, glass and stone mosaic backsplash tile, on a running bond, stacked, herringbone or chevron layout, with outlet cuts cut flush.

What we check in a New Britain kitchen before setting
Plaster condition
Loose or crumbling plaster is cut back and patched with cement board or setting compound; sound plaster is primed. Tile bonded to failing plaster comes off with the plaster.
Countertop and cabinet lines
Old cabinets and counters are rarely level with each other. We set the first course to the counter and plan the cut course at the cabinets, where it is least visible, and use a color-matched silicone at the counter joint.
Outlets and switches
Pre-war kitchens have few outlets, often in odd places. If your electrician is adding or moving any, that happens before tile and needs an electrical permit; we cut the tile to the new boxes and fit box extenders so plates sit flat.
Permits in New Britain
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Kitchen Backsplash Installation in New Britain: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Yes, when the plaster is sound and flattened first. We check for hollow areas, cut out and patch what is loose, prime the surface, and use a polymer-modified thin-set. Where a wall is badly out of flat we skim it or add a layer of cement board so the tile sits true.
A standard 30- to 40-square-foot backsplash in ceramic or porcelain is set one day and grouted the next, and the kitchen is usable that evening. We protect the counters, cut outside or with dust extraction, and leave the room clean.
We cut the tile precisely around every box and install box extenders so the cover plates sit flush on the finished tile. Adding, moving or converting outlets to GFCI is your electrician's work under an electrical permit from the City of New Britain, scheduled before the tile day.
Glazed ceramic or porcelain, in any pattern, cleans with a damp cloth and does not stain; behind a range we like a full-height field of the same tile or a porcelain panel rather than a decorative mosaic that catches grease. Natural stone and unglazed terracotta need sealing and more care.
