Mudroom Tile Installation Done Right the First Time

A mudroom is the one room in the house where the tile has to survive being wet and frozen at the same time. Boots come in with salt on them, the door is open in January with the wind driving in, and a wet mop goes down and often does not get fully dry. Ordinary interior tile handles that badly. Porcelain is impervious, at 0.5% absorption or less, and it is fired hard enough to take a freeze. Quarry tile is a dense unglazed ceramic that takes on a small amount of water, so it is not impervious, but it is fired hard enough to take a freeze and it is still the right tile for a mudroom.

The part people skip is under the tile. In a Connecticut mudroom you are laying tile over a concrete slab or a framed floor over a crawl space, and either way water will find it. We build up the base with a cement backer board, run a bonded waterproofing membrane across the whole area, and slope it very slightly toward a drain if there is one. Tile grout is not waterproof. It drinks water by design, and the membrane under it is what actually keeps water out of the structure.

On the surface we use a through-body porcelain in a slip-resistant finish, or quarry tile, both rated for wet areas. We keep the same tile inside and out where the mudroom opens to a porch, so the threshold is not a lip you catch your foot on. Grout gets sealed, silicone goes in the movement joints at the perimeter and the door jambs rather than grout, and the result is a floor that takes the whole winter without lifting off the slab. 1-year workmanship warranty, same as everything else we do.

Before you book, read what L/360 and L/720 mean for a tiled floor. It is five minutes and it saves guessing.

In New Britain we lay porcelain, quarry and slip-resistant mudroom tile, on an offset layout, in herringbone or a grid, over a base that takes the water without moving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mudroom Tile Questions, Straight Answers

No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.

It depends on what is there. Over a sound concrete slab we can usually build up a backer board and membrane and get a good result. Over an existing tile floor, or over particleboard or a soft subfloor, we would rather remove it. A mudroom is where water collects, and it is the worst possible place to bury a problem floor.

It can, and the reason is almost never the tile. It is water getting into the substrate and freezing there. If the base is built with a backer board and a bonded membrane, there is nothing under the tile for water to get into, and freeze-thaw stops being the problem. That is what the membrane is for.

Where there is no threshold or step, we usually carry the same tile through so the transition is flat. Where the mudroom is a distinct space, a different tile is fine as long as both are wet-area rated. We will tell you what the sill condition is before we recommend a layout.

Not for the tile itself. Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code, tiling and similar finish work not involving structural changes or alterations is exempt. Adding or moving a drain, or running new wiring for a heater or light, is permitted work done by that licensed trade. We flag those items before work starts so nothing stalls mid-job.

Through-body porcelain in a textured, slip-resistant finish, or quarry tile. Porcelain is non-porous, at 0.5% absorption or less. Quarry tile does take on some water, but it is dense, fired hard and it holds up to freeze-thaw. Porcelain never needs sealing for water resistance. Quarry tile does not need it for water resistance either, but because it is unglazed we seal it so grease and stains stay out of the body. What you want to avoid is a glazed ceramic with a smooth face. It is slippery when wet and it will crack if it freezes while saturated. Glazed porcelain with a matte surface is the look most people want and the same performance.
