Large Format Tile Installation Done Right the First Time
Large format tile is harder to cut and harder to support. Cutting a sheet needs a wet saw with the tile supported, a fresh diamond blade and two people on the job. A 24 by 48 sheet of porcelain weighs more than a person wants to hold at eye level for an hour. If the substrate underneath has any movement at all, that weight turns into a crack running across the face of the tile. Most large format failures we get called about were installed on a floor that was flat enough to look fine and not flat enough to hold.
So the work is under the tile. The substrate gets checked with a straightedge and a level across the whole plane, not spot-checked in a corner. Anything out gets ground down or built up and re-checked until the deviation across the sheet is inside what the thinset can absorb. On a poured floor we use a self-leveling compound to bring the whole area to one plane, and we let it cure fully before a single tile goes down.
Then it is set in full-bed large-format thinset at a higher gauge trowel, combed in one direction and back-buttered so coverage is complete. Grout joints are sized to the tile's dimensional variation, the average caliper across the boxes rather than the smallest tile, and never tighter than three times that variation, because a 24 by 48 sheet varies more than a 6 by 6 does, and forcing a tight joint is what puts the corners out of plane. Every large format job carries the same 1-year workmanship warranty as the rest of our work.
Before you book, read how a subfloor is prepared before tile goes down. It is five minutes and it saves guessing.
In New Britain we set large format porcelain and natural stone tile, on a true linear lay, a bond or a herringbone layout, with the right setting material and leveling clips so the flatness holds.
What You Get
- Substrate checked across the whole plane, not spot-checked
- Self-leveling compound where the floor cannot be corrected any other way
- Full-bed large format thinset, never spot-set
- Movement-joint profile over substrate seams, so the joint is never bridged with tile
- Grout joints sized to the tile's real dimensional variation
- 1-year workmanship warranty on your install

Frequently Asked Questions
Large Format Tile Questions, Straight Answers
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Sometimes, and it depends entirely on what is under the old tile. If the old floor is solid, well-bonded and we can get the surface flat enough, we will consider it. If the old tile moves, sounds hollow, or the plane is too far off to correct, we will tell you the demolition has to happen. Setting heavy tile on a flexing base is how you end up paying twice.
Yes. They need a larger trowel gauge and complete coverage under the whole sheet, which usually means combing in one direction and back-buttering the other. Partial coverage is not good practice at this size. Voids under a slab are where cracks start.
It depends almost entirely on the condition of the substrate, not the tile. If the floor is flat and accessible, setting is quick. If it needs grinding or self-leveling, that is the bulk of the time, and the self-leveling compound has to cure before tiling starts. We give you a written schedule at the estimate so you know exactly which days we need.
A 1-year written workmanship warranty on every job. We are a registered Connecticut contractor. CT HIC #0706534 is verifiable through the state HIC lookup, and we are rated five stars on Google. Estimates are free and we will tell you honestly if your floor needs something other than what you called about.
Any edge 15 inches or longer. That is the Tile Council of North America's definition of large format, and 15 inches is lower than the 18 inches most people picture. An 18 by 18, a 24 by 24, a 24 by 36 and a 24 by 48 porcelain slab all fall inside it. The reason it is a separate skill is the weight and the handling. A big sheet needs two people, proper suction-cup tools, and a substrate flat enough to set it on.
