Bathroom Tile Remodeling in Newington, CT
Bathroom tile remodels in Newington's mid-century capes and ranches, where three in five homes were built between 1950 and 1979 and the floor under the tile is the part that decides the job.
Bathroom tile in Newington
1967 is the median year Newington's housing went up, and where a bathroom is opened the wall behind the tile is usually drywall on framing.
2,152 of Newington's homes are attached, and where a bathroom is in a three or four unit building the work is usually scheduled apartment by apartment.
Newington runs its own water and sewer, and where a bathroom is remodeled the service work stays with the town rather than a private company.
The Newington Junction South nomination describes a 1725 house with brick at the first floor, and where a bathroom is in that row the wall may be brick.
Newington charges $50 for a permit up to $3,000 and $15 per $1,000, and where a bathroom needs one the fee follows the value of the work.
Our base on Lincoln Street is about 13 minutes from a Newington bathroom, so where a room is booked the measure and the quote are usually done together.

Bath Remodel · Newington
Newington bathrooms: the tile is the easy part. The floor under it is the job.
So we open the floor before we promise anything. If the subfloor is bare board or a thin membrane, it comes up and we rebuild it properly. If the joists deflect, and under a filled tub they often do, we level them first. Then waterproofing goes on as its own bonded system, not a painted-on excuse, the wet wall gets a real pan, and only then does any tile get set. The order is the whole point.
Newington is thirteen minutes from our base on the Garfield Street run, and seventy-eight percent of its homes are owner-occupied. These are usually whole-bath remodels in houses people have owned for decades, planned carefully rather than rushed. We bring samples and layout sheets to the estimate and give you a written day-by-day schedule.
Many Newington houses still have the bathroom they were built with in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, and that is exactly the era that makes a bathroom remodel harder. These are single-piece molded tub-shower units sitting on joists sized for far less water than a modern bath holds, over subfloor that was framed wide and often never plywooded. Tiling that surface is straightforward. What is under it decides whether the job lasts or has to be redone.

In Newington we remodel bathrooms in porcelain, mosaic and natural stone tile, on full height, wainscot and niche layouts, and we manage the tile side of the job end to end.

What we check before tile goes down in a Newington bath
What is under the subfloor
A 1960s ranch floor is often bare wide boards or a thin membrane with no plywood under it. We open a section, check the joists and the span, and rebuild the base so it will not deflect under a filled tub.
One-piece tub-shower units
A molded 1980s or 90s surround cannot be tiled onto. We strip it out, patch what it leaves behind, and build a flat surface that takes tile cleanly, or rebuild the wet area properly if the plumbing needs it.
The tub deck and corners
Tiled tub decks from this era leak where the deck meets the wall. We rebuild the deck sloped and waterproofed, with a silicone joint at every change of plane, so water runs to the drain instead of into the wall.
Permits in Newington
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Bathroom Tile Remodeling in Newington: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
No, and we will not try. The surround comes off, we patch and flatten what is behind it, and the tile goes on a proper surface. We can tile over existing tile sometimes, but a molded plastic tub-shower is a different job and it has to come out.
The tile, the new vanity and the countertop are all exempt from a building permit under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code, so long as nothing structural changes. If we move a drain, add a valve, or run new wiring, those trades are permitted separately by the plumber or electrician doing them, filed through the Town of Newington Building Department at Town Hall, 200 Garfield Street. We tell you which parts of your scope need a permit before work starts, so nothing stalls mid-job.
Yes, and we prefer to. Tile is the trade everything else waits on, so we sequence the work so nobody is standing around. If you would rather handle the plumbing yourself, that is fine. We will tell you exactly what has to be done and when.
The work carries a 1-year written workmanship warranty. Our HIC number, #0706534, is in the state HIC lookup. Dmtilellc is registered and insured in Connecticut, and we are rated five stars on Google. The estimate is free, and we will tell you straight if your bathroom is not a good fit for what we do.
A standard 5x8 bath with a tub surround, floor and one vanity wall typically runs 6 to 9 working days, including waterproofing cure and flood-test time. If the subfloor needs rebuilding or the tub-shower unit is being replaced, add a day or two. You get a written schedule at the estimate so you know the days we need your bathroom.
We build the pan, then go over it with a bonded waterproofing membrane such as a Schluter-KERDI style sheet or a liquid-applied one where the geometry calls for it. The membrane runs over the pan, up the walls, around the curb, and over every seam, corner and valve penetration, and we hold a twenty-four-hour flood test before any tile goes down. If a drop moves, we find it while it is still inexpensive to fix.
Only sometimes, and only when the old tile passes the checks: solidly bonded everywhere when you tap it, flat, and structurally sound, with enough give at the outlets, counters and doors to absorb the added thickness. When it fails any of those, tiling over it locks the problem in. On a wet area we almost always take it down to the substrate instead.
