Shower Tile Installation in Avon, CT
High-finish tiled showers in Avon's 1970s and 80s colonials and contemporaries, and in the townhouse communities off Route 44 and Route 10.
Shower tile in Avon
Just 425 housing units in Avon went up in 1939 or earlier, so where a shower opens into one the wall is often plaster rather than drywall.
The nearest record station, Hartford Bradley, puts January at 27.1 degrees and 14.2 inches of snow, and where a shower room runs cold the pipe is usually checked.
Detached houses make up 71.9% of Avon's housing, and where a shower sits in one of them the space is usually worked without sharing walls.
Avon counted 6,468 owner occupied homes out of 7,575 occupied units, so in a rented apartment a shower is usually booked around the owner's schedule.
Where an Avon shower needs a permit, the town takes it online and the building department reads it from 60 West Main Street.
An Avon shower is 27 minutes from our base, and the wall above the pan is usually priced before the tile is ordered.

Daniel did some tile work for me and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Absolutely amazing work and craftsmanship. He showed up on time, was very professional throughout the whole job, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he takes pride in his work and pays attention to the little details. Good, reliable contractors aren’t always easy to find, and Daniel is definitely one of them. The quality of the work was excellent, everything was done right, and he was worth every penny. I will definitely use him again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality tile work. Highly recommend! Daniel, thank you so much for getting the job done on short notice.

Shower Tile · Avon
Avon showers: the primary bath, done properly this time
The shower most in need of redoing in Avon is the primary-bath stall from the 1970s and 80s, when nearly half of the town's housing went up: the colonials and contemporaries on Huckleberry Hill, Woodford Hill and around Buckingham, three feet by four, four-by-four tile, a mud pan on a PVC liner, a framed glass door. Forty years on, there is a smell that says the pan has failed.
Owners here usually want the replacement larger, brighter and built to a higher standard: a bench, a recessed niche sized to the tile, a linear drain, frameless glass and large-format porcelain or stone-look tile with tight, even joints. That is precision work, and the substrate has to be right before any of it looks good. Avon is about twenty-seven minutes from our base, so we schedule design visits and installation days in blocks rather than short trips, which keeps the project moving once it starts.
Not sure how much of this your home needs? Start here: what actually goes behind shower tile It takes five minutes and saves guessing.
In Avon we set porcelain, ceramic, mosaic, glass and natural stone shower tile, on an offset layout, stacked, brick-set or herringbone, over a bonded waterproofing system.

Planning an Avon shower to a high finish
Flatness before large-format tile
Tile with an edge of 15 inches or more needs the wall within 1/8 inch over 10 feet. Old studs rarely are, so furring and shimming is a scheduled step, not an afterthought. It is what makes tight grout lines possible.
Niche and bench on the grid
We size the niche so its edges land on grout lines and the bench height and slope work with the tile module. Schluter pre-formed niches and benches are integrated into the waterproofing rather than cut in after.
Glass planning
Frameless glass needs a plumb, straight curb or a level curbless edge and solid blocking where hinges land. We coordinate the measurements with your glass company before the tile is set, not after.
Permits in Avon
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Shower Tile Installation in Avon: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Usually yes. The pan is recessed between the joists (with the framing reinforced to carry it) or the surrounding floor is built up slightly; a linear drain at the back or at the entry keeps the slope in one direction. We look at the joists from below first and tell you which method fits your house.
Yes, marble, limestone and quartzite. Stone needs a stiffer substrate than porcelain (the floor standard is L/720 rather than L/360), a white thin-set, sealing before grout, and a maintenance plan you are comfortable with. If you want the look without the care, we also install large-format marble-look porcelain, and we will show you both side by side.
With rectified (precision-cut) porcelain and a flat substrate we set joints at 1/16 to 1/8 inch. Tight joints magnify any lippage, so we use a leveling clip system on large-format tile and lay out every wall so cuts land in the corners and below eye level.
Tile and finish work not involving structural changes or alterations is exempt under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code. Relocating the drain or changing the valve is a plumbing permit and new lighting or a fan is an electrical permit, both submitted online to the Avon Building Department at 60 West Main Street by the licensed trade.
We build the pan, then go over it with a bonded waterproofing membrane such as a Schluter-KERDI style sheet or a liquid-applied one where the geometry calls for it. The membrane runs over the pan, up the walls, around the curb, and over every seam, corner and valve penetration, and we hold a twenty-four-hour flood test before any tile goes down. If a drop moves, we find it while it is still inexpensive to fix.
Only sometimes, and only when the old tile passes the checks: solidly bonded everywhere when you tap it, flat, and structurally sound, with enough give at the outlets, counters and doors to absorb the added thickness. When it fails any of those, tiling over it locks the problem in. On a wet area we almost always take it down to the substrate instead.
