Kitchen Backsplash Installation in Avon, CT
Design-level kitchen backsplashes in Avon: full-height range walls, hand-made and large-format tile, and precise cuts in the kitchens of Huckleberry Hill, Woodford Hill and the Farmington Valley's newer homes.
Kitchen backsplash in Avon
Avon's housing has a 1979 median build year, so the kitchen walls in a newer house are usually a plain drywall face.
Between 1980 and 1989, 1,721 housing units went up in Avon, and where a backsplash is fitted in one of them the wall behind is usually drywall.
Pine Grove farmhouses are clapboarded and two-story with pitched roofs, and where a backsplash goes in one the wall often needs its own fix.
In November 2023 the town said FEMA had proposed flood map changes, and where a backsplash job is in that area the floor level is usually checked first.
Where an Avon backsplash needs a permit, the application goes in online to the building department on West Main Street, which keeps weekday hours.
An Avon backsplash is 27 minutes out from our base on Lincoln Street, and the wall is usually measured before the order once the cabinets come out.

Daniel did some tile work for me and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Absolutely amazing work and craftsmanship. He showed up on time, was very professional throughout the whole job, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he takes pride in his work and pays attention to the little details. Good, reliable contractors aren’t always easy to find, and Daniel is definitely one of them. The quality of the work was excellent, everything was done right, and he was worth every penny. I will definitely use him again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality tile work. Highly recommend! Daniel, thank you so much for getting the job done on short notice.

Avon kitchens: where the backsplash is the design statement
Avon kitchens are large, and most have been renovated at least once. The 1970s and 80s colonials on Huckleberry and Woodford Hills have often had a full kitchen redo with a wide range and a hood that wants a feature wall behind it; the homes built in the 2000s came with granite counters and the four-inch upstand that is now the first thing owners want gone.
The backsplash those kitchens call for is correspondingly ambitious: slab-look porcelain panels behind the range with matched veining, hand-made zellige laid out deliberately, marble herringbone, or a large-format field with almost invisible joints. Each of those is unforgiving of a wall that is not flat or a layout that was not drawn first, so we plan them on paper, sort the attic stock for any future repair, and set them with the same precision as a shower. Avon is about twenty-seven minutes from our base; we schedule backsplashes there in full-day blocks.

In Avon we install subway, herringbone, chevron, zellige, glass and stone mosaic backsplash tile, on a running bond, stacked, herringbone or chevron layout, with outlet cuts cut flush.

Avon backsplash planning notes
Panel and slab handling
Large porcelain panels are templated, cut with a rail saw, and set with a medium-bed mortar and back-buttering. Outlet cut-outs in a panel are plotted before cutting. There is no second attempt on a single-piece range wall.
Hand-made tile layout
Zellige and other hand-made tiles vary in size and shade. We dry-lay from several boxes, blend the shades and set with a joint that suits the tile, and we tell you in advance how the edges and outlets will look.
Hood, window and pot-filler
The pattern is centered on the hood, and we check the pot-filler, the window casing and the upper-cabinet returns so every one of them meets the tile cleanly rather than at a random point in the pattern.
Permits in Avon
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Kitchen Backsplash Installation in Avon: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Yes. We measure the wall and every penetration, template the panel, and cut it before installation. The wall is flattened first, because a 1/4-inch-thick 5-by-10-foot panel shows every hollow. Where the wall is very uneven we skim it or install a new substrate rather than shim the panel.
By treating it as the point. We dry-lay from multiple boxes to spread the shade variation, choose a joint width that suits the irregular edges (often very tight with a matching grout), and we agree with you on how edges finish (a pencil, a mitered edge or an exposed glazed edge) before the first tile is set.
Rarely. The upstand is glued to the wall and siliconed to the counter; we remove it, patch the wall band, and tile down to a silicone joint at the counter. If your counters are being replaced at the same time, the fabricator can simply omit the upstand.
You do. We do not sell or supply tile. We set what you buy, and we are good at telling you what will work in the space: which formats suit a range wall, how the pattern finishes at the edges and how much overage to order.
You choose it. Many Avon clients work with a showroom or a designer who specifies the tile and the pattern, and we set what they specify. We bring samples when you want a second opinion, and we will tell you honestly if a tile is a poor fit for the location.
