Plainville bathrooms: tub-to-shower conversions in small rooms
That changes the job. You are often converting a tub to a shower to buy floor space, not because somebody planned a primary suite from the start.
These are also older, tighter houses with plumbing added to over the years. A tub-to-shower conversion where the drain stays put is the clean, affordable version of this job, and it is what we look for first.
When the drain has to move, we tell you up front that it is permitted work, done by a licensed plumber, and it is the line item that moves the number. Nobody should find that out halfway through a demo.
Plainville is about ten minutes from our base, one of our closest towns. Most of the work here is a full retile on the existing footprint. Pan out, subfloor rebuilt wherever it is soft, a bonded waterproofing membrane as its own layer, flood test, then tile.
In a small room the waterproofing is the part people are tempted to rush, because the tile is what they see. It is also the part that decides whether the job is still good years later.
Plainville homes are small and Plainville bathrooms are smaller. The median house here went up in 1971 and more than a third of the housing stock is in two- or multi-unit buildings, so a lot of the baths we work in have the tub against two walls with the door swinging into it.
Not sure how much of this your home needs? Start here: the seven things that move the price of a bathroom remodel It takes five minutes and saves guessing.
In Plainville we remodel bathrooms in porcelain, mosaic and natural stone tile, on full height, wainscot and niche layouts, and we manage the tile side of the job end to end.

What we check before quoting a Plainville bathroom
Can the drain stay where it is?
This one question decides the cost of the job. A tub-to-shower conversion with the existing drain in place is clean and quick. A moved drain is permitted plumbing, priced separately, and it needs the floor opened up properly rather than patched. We look at the layout before recommending anything.
Is there soft floor at the tub edge?
We press along the tub flange line and check for deflection. In a Plainville house where the surround has been leaking into the subfloor for years, this is usually where the water went first, and it is the part that gets missed if nobody opens the floor.
How much room is there to work?
Small rooms change the layout options more than the budget does. A curbless shower needs the floor low enough to drain by fall, and in a tight bath that may mean raising the whole room floor, which changes the door swing and the vanity. We check the clearances and tell you what the space actually allows.
Permits in Plainville
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Bathroom Tile Remodeling in Plainville: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
In a Plainville house the water usually got in at the tub surround and has been softening the subfloor under the tile. Once a floor is soft it has to come up and be rebuilt rather than tiled over. We open the area, rebuild the base flat and sound, waterproof it, and flood-test before closing anything up.
No permit for the tile, a new vanity or a countertop: that finish work is exempt under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code. If we move a drain, add a valve or run new wiring, those trades are permitted separately by the plumber or electrician doing them. Plainville no longer takes paper applications. Every permit goes through the town's ViewPoint Cloud portal and each permit is paid separately, so we raise those items early rather than the week of the job.
Usually yes, but the wins are different in a small house. Converting a tub to a shower gives you a floor you can stand on, and reworking the layout so the door does not swing into the toilet is a bigger daily difference than new tile would be. We will tell you which changes in your bathroom actually pay off and which are just money spent on surfaces.
A straight retile on an existing layout with the drain staying put is usually several days, and the waterproofing cure time sets the schedule more than the tiling does. Demo, rebuild and waterproofing, then a flood test, then tile. If the drain moves or the floor has to come down for a curbless shower, add days. We put it in writing at the estimate.
Your install is covered by a 1-year written workmanship warranty. We are a registered and insured Connecticut contractor, CT HIC #0706534, which you can verify in the state HIC lookup, and we are rated five stars on Google. The estimate is free, and we will tell you plainly if the job is not one we do well.
Yes, and in a small house it is often the single change that makes the bathroom usable. You gain a floor you can actually stand on. If the plumbing stays where it is we can usually convert without moving a drain, which is the biggest cost driver in the job. We tell you at the estimate whether your layout allows it.
We build the pan, then go over it with a bonded waterproofing membrane such as a Schluter-KERDI style sheet or a liquid-applied one where the geometry calls for it. The membrane runs over the pan, up the walls, around the curb, and over every seam, corner and valve penetration, and we hold a twenty-four-hour flood test before any tile goes down. If a drop moves, we find it while it is still inexpensive to fix.
Only sometimes, and only when the old tile passes the checks: solidly bonded everywhere when you tap it, flat, and structurally sound, with enough give at the outlets, counters and doors to absorb the added thickness. When it fails any of those, tiling over it locks the problem in. On a wet area we almost always take it down to the substrate instead.
