Custom tile in the Hardware City's older homes
Most custom tile requests in New Britain come from the city's older houses, and they tend to be about restoring or reinterpreting something the house once had: a hexagon mosaic floor in an entry hall below Walnut Hill Park, a fireplace surround in a 1920s colonial, a mudroom floor off the back stairs of a three-decker, a laundry room that has never been finished. The houses have character and out-of-square rooms in equal measure, and both shape the layout.
The work is drawn before it is set: the room measured at several points, the pattern centered on the feature that matters (the door, the hearth, the window) and the cuts planned so they land where the eye does not go. On plaster walls and board subfloors the substrate is built first, because a pattern only reads well on a flat plane. With our base six minutes away we can bring samples and a mock-up of the pattern to the room before anything is ordered.
A pattern has to land the same way in every room it crosses, and an old house that has been patched twice does not measure the same from end to end. So the drawing you approve covers the whole job, not just the room where the eye goes first, and if the pattern changes anywhere, the drawing changes with it before the work starts.
