Bathroom Tile Remodeling in Middletown, CT
Bathroom tile remodels across Middletown: Wesleyan-area Victorians, Westfield and South Farms colonials, and the apartment and condo buildings that hold a third of the city's homes.
Bathroom tile in Middletown
About 34% of Middletown's housing sits in buildings that hold five or more units, and the work in one is often booked unit by unit.
The Main Street nomination calls most commercial buildings load-bearing masonry, and where a bathroom shares that wall the tile usually goes on its face.
About 23% of Middletown's housing was built before 1940, so where a bathroom wall is opened in one of those houses the framing often decides the layout.
Middletown's permit list exempts tiling and carpeting where nothing structural changes, so where a bathroom is only retiled no filing is usually needed.
A Middletown bathroom permit is filed with the Building Division at 245 deKoven Drive, where it is read once the paperwork and payment are in.
From our base on Lincoln Street a Middletown bathroom is about 18 minutes away, and the quote usually follows the measure.

Daniel did some tile work for me and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Absolutely amazing work and craftsmanship. He showed up on time, was very professional throughout the whole job, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he takes pride in his work and pays attention to the little details. Good, reliable contractors aren’t always easy to find, and Daniel is definitely one of them. The quality of the work was excellent, everything was done right, and he was worth every penny. I will definitely use him again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality tile work. Highly recommend! Daniel, thank you so much for getting the job done on short notice.

Bath Remodel · Middletown
Middletown has one of the widest ranges of bathrooms on our route
Middletown gives us three different bathroom jobs. In a pre-war house near Main Street or the college, the bathroom sits on old framing behind plaster walls, and the work starts with structure. In a 1980s colonial in Westfield or South Farms it is usually mastic-set tile and a leaking tub deck, replaced with a properly waterproofed shower. And in the apartment and condo buildings that hold a third of the city's homes, it is a fast, durable rebuild that respects the building's rules and the unit below.
Because roughly half of Middletown's homes are rented, we remodel for landlords and condo owners as often as for families. A landlord wants a bathroom that survives tenants and turns around between leases; a condo owner needs the association's hours and a plan for the flood test; a homeowner in an old house needs the floor made flat before anything else. Middletown is eighteen minutes from our base on the Route 9 run.
Not sure how much of this your home needs? Start here: the seven things that move the price of a bathroom remodel It takes five minutes and saves guessing.
In Middletown we remodel bathrooms in porcelain, mosaic and natural stone tile, on full height, wainscot and niche layouts, and we manage the tile side of the job end to end.

Before we quote a Middletown bathroom
What is under the tub
In pre-1940 Middletown houses the tub often sits on a subfloor that was cut for the drain and never reinforced. We open the floor at the drain, check the joist, and decide on sistering or blocking before the new pan is built.
Multi-unit logistics
For an apartment or condo bath we confirm elevator access, where a dumpster or debris bags can go, the building's work hours, and whether a waterproofing membrane on the whole floor is required. We recommend one over any occupied unit.
1980s tub decks and corners
Tiled tub decks from this era leak where the deck meets the wall. We rebuild the deck with a sloped, waterproofed top and a silicone joint at every change of plane, or convert it into a tiled shower if the tub is unused.
Permits in Middletown
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Bathroom Tile Remodeling in Middletown: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Yes. A large share of Middletown's housing is multi-unit and we plan for it: association or landlord paperwork first, protection for shared hallways, sealed debris removal, and a full-floor waterproofing membrane over any unit below. The tile scope for a standard apartment bath usually runs about a week.
Yes, provided the structure is checked honestly. Old joists are often full-size lumber and strong, but they may have been notched for plumbing. We inspect from below where possible, correct deflection and level, and use a bonded waterproofing system that tolerates the small seasonal movement an old frame has.
Yes. A curbless shower on a framed floor means recessing the pan between the joists or building the floor up around it; we tell you which is feasible after looking at the framing. Benches are built and waterproofed as part of the shower, and we add solid blocking behind the tile wherever grab bars are planned, even if they are installed later.
Not for tile, cabinets or countertops with no structural changes or alterations. Those are exempt under the state building code, and the city's Building Division publishes its own list of exempt work. Valve, drain, outlet and fan changes are permitted through the Building Division at 245 deKoven Drive by the licensed plumber or electrician. Applications there are reviewed only once paperwork and payment are in, so we raise permit items early.
We build the pan, then go over it with a bonded waterproofing membrane such as a Schluter-KERDI style sheet or a liquid-applied one where the geometry calls for it. The membrane runs over the pan, up the walls, around the curb, and over every seam, corner and valve penetration, and we hold a twenty-four-hour flood test before any tile goes down. If a drop moves, we find it while it is still inexpensive to fix.
Only sometimes, and only when the old tile passes the checks: solidly bonded everywhere when you tap it, flat, and structurally sound, with enough give at the outlets, counters and doors to absorb the added thickness. When it fails any of those, tiling over it locks the problem in. On a wet area we almost always take it down to the substrate instead.
