Daniel did some tile work for me and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Absolutely amazing work and craftsmanship. He showed up on time, was very professional throughout the whole job, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he takes pride in his work and pays attention to the little details. Good, reliable contractors aren’t always easy to find, and Daniel is definitely one of them. The quality of the work was excellent, everything was done right, and he was worth every penny. I will definitely use him again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality tile work. Highly recommend! Daniel, thank you so much for getting the job done on short notice.

Backsplash · Cromwell
Cromwell kitchens: from laminate lip to full-height tile
The largest group of Cromwell kitchens dates from the 1970s and 80s and shares a look: a laminate counter with a four-inch integral lip or a four-inch tile upstand, a soffit over the upper cabinets, drywall walls, and a range with a recirculating hood. Forty years later most have had new counters and either new or painted cabinets, and the backsplash is what remains to be done, in the townhouse condos along Route 9 as well as on the single-family streets.
The typical Cromwell backsplash runs from a new quartz or granite counter to the underside of the uppers, with a full-height panel or field behind the range. The work is straightforward on sound drywall, which is what most of these kitchens have; the care goes into removing the old upstand without tearing the wall, patching that band, and laying out the pattern so it centers on the range and finishes evenly at both ends. Cromwell is fifteen minutes from our base.

In Cromwell we install subway, herringbone, chevron, zellige, glass and stone mosaic backsplash tile, on a running bond, stacked, herringbone or chevron layout, with outlet cuts cut flush.

The old upstand
Whether laminate, tile or 4-inch granite, it is glued to the wall and comes off with some drywall paper. We patch that band flat and prime it before tile.
Outlets and GFCI
Many 1970s kitchens have too few outlets, and none are GFCI. Adding or converting them is your electrician's job under an electrical permit; we cut tile to the new boxes and use extenders so plates sit flush.
Pattern start point
The pattern centers on the range hood; we check the window and the ends of the run so cuts are balanced, and we agree the edge finish (a metal trim, a bullnose or a pencil) before setting.
Permits in Cromwell
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Kitchen Backsplash Installation in Cromwell: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Yes, if it is a separate glued piece. A post-formed laminate counter with an integral curved backsplash is one piece with the counter; in that case the tile starts above the lip with a trim, or the counter is replaced first. We tell you which you have in the walkthrough.
The measured area plus about 10 percent for cuts and future repairs, more for diagonal or herringbone patterns. We measure the run and give you the square footage and the overage figure so you can order it from the supplier of your choice. We set the tile you buy.
Setting is one day for most kitchens; grout follows the next day once the thin-set has cured, and the kitchen is usable both evenings. Full-height range walls or mosaic sheets add time. We mask the counters and cabinets, cut with dust extraction and clean up before we leave.
Yes. We follow the association's hours and access rules, protect the hallway, and keep cutting outside or with extraction. A backsplash is a low-disruption job (no plumbing, usually no electrical unless outlets change) so it fits condo rules easily.
