Kitchen Backsplash Installation in Berlin, CT
Kitchen backsplashes in Berlin: the finishing touch in Kensington's 1950s capes and ranches and in the 1990s and 2000s colonials off the Chamberlain Highway and Route 9.
Kitchen backsplash in Berlin
1972 is the median year Berlin's housing went up, and where a backsplash is fitted the wall behind it is usually drywall on framing rather than plaster.
1,780 of Berlin's homes were built in the 1950s, and where a kitchen there is taken apart the cabinets are often the oldest part of the room.
Kensington and Worthington are named districts in Berlin, and where a kitchen sits in one of them the water comes from the fire district utility.
The Berlin Water Control Commission serves about 2,900 customers in town, and where a kitchen is remodeled the cabinet and sink work are usually booked together.
Berlin's building department at Town Hall, 240 Kensington Road, takes permit applications online, and where the work needs one it is filed there.
The trip to a Berlin backsplash from our Lincoln Street base is about 9 minutes, so where a wall is uneven the layout is usually drawn on it.

Daniel did some tile work for me and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Absolutely amazing work and craftsmanship. He showed up on time, was very professional throughout the whole job, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he takes pride in his work and pays attention to the little details. Good, reliable contractors aren’t always easy to find, and Daniel is definitely one of them. The quality of the work was excellent, everything was done right, and he was worth every penny. I will definitely use him again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality tile work. Highly recommend! Daniel, thank you so much for getting the job done on short notice.

Backsplash · Berlin
Berlin kitchens: replacing the four-inch laminate lip and the builder's 4×4
Berlin kitchens come in two generations, and both are ready for a backsplash. The 1950s and 60s kitchens around Kensington and Worthington often still have a four-inch laminate or tile lip and a soffit above the uppers. The kitchens in the colonials built from the 1980s through the 2000s have a four-inch granite or Corian upstand and a builder-grade ceramic field that has yellowed along with the cabinets.
In both cases the backsplash is usually the last piece of a kitchen refresh: new counters, painted or new cabinets, then tile from counter to upper cabinet and full height behind the range. We remove the old upstand carefully, repair the wall behind it and lay out the tile so the pattern centers on the range and the window. Berlin is nine minutes from our base, so we can drop a sample board on the counter before you order.

In Berlin we install subway, herringbone, chevron, zellige, glass and stone mosaic backsplash tile, on a running bond, stacked, herringbone or chevron layout, with outlet cuts cut flush.

Berlin backsplash planning
Removing the old upstand
A glued 4-inch granite or laminate lip usually takes some drywall paper with it. We patch and prime that band so the new tile has a sound base along the most visible line in the kitchen.
Centering on the range and window
We start the layout at the range hood centerline and check what lands at the window casing and the end of the run, adjusting so both ends finish with a sensible cut rather than a sliver.
Under-cabinet lighting
If you are adding lights under the uppers, the wiring and any new outlets go in first (electrical permit through Berlin Town Hall), and we cut the tile to suit. A finished tile line under the light rail looks far better than a strip added later.
Permits in Berlin
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Kitchen Backsplash Installation in Berlin: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Countertop first, always. The backsplash sits on the finished counter with a color-matched silicone joint, and any small gap along an uneven counter is hidden by the tile. If the counter is being replaced, we schedule the backsplash a few days after templating and installation.
Yes. The upstand is a separate piece glued to the wall and siliconed to the counter; we cut the silicone, work it free and protect the counter edge. The wall behind is patched before tile. We recommend keeping the piece until the job is done in case a repair is ever needed.
There is no rule, but a classic 3×6 or 4×8 subway in a running bond or a vertical stack sits naturally in a mid-century kitchen, while a larger colonial kitchen with a big range wall can carry a herringbone, a hand-made zellige or a slab-look porcelain panel behind the range. We bring samples so you see them against your counter and cabinets.
Most backsplashes are set on day one and grouted on day two, with the kitchen usable each evening. Full-height range walls or intricate mosaics add a day. We protect counters and floors, cut with dust extraction, and remove the masking and debris when we leave.
