Kitchen Backsplash Installation in East Hampton, CT

Kitchen backsplash tile in East Hampton, CT. We straighten the wall before we tile it, because a wavy wall is why a straight tile line goes crooked and stays that way.

Kitchen backsplash in East Hampton

45% of East Hampton's housing went up in 1980 or later, and in a newer kitchen a backsplash usually sits on a plainer wall.

Belltown's mill buildings are wood-framed, post-and-beam or balloon framed, and where a backsplash meets one of those walls the framing is often old.

The Middle Haddam Historic District Commission meets monthly and keeps a handbook, so where a kitchen is in that village the local rules can be checked early.

Routes 16, 66, 151 and 196 run through East Hampton, and where a backsplash is off a main road the delivery is sent when the traffic is lighter.

East Hampton charges $37 for the first $1,000 of construction value, and where a backsplash needs a permit the fee follows the work.

An East Hampton backsplash is about 35 minutes from our base, so where the job is a long run the measure and quote are done in one visit.

Daniel did some tile work for me and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Absolutely amazing work and craftsmanship. He showed up on time, was very professional throughout the whole job, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he takes pride in his work and pays attention to the little details. Good, reliable contractors aren’t always easy to find, and Daniel is definitely one of them. The quality of the work was excellent, everything was done right, and he was worth every penny. I will definitely use him again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality tile work. Highly recommend! Daniel, thank you so much for getting the job done on short notice.

Backsplash · East Hampton

On an East Hampton wall, the tile is the easy part. The wall is the job.

Set tile straight onto that and the grout lines wander, the pattern drifts across the wall, and the course under the upper cabinets tapers from a full tile down to a sliver. So the work starts before the tile does. We run a straightedge across the whole wall, knock the high spots down, fill the low ones, and snap a level line for the first course.

Because so many of these houses are owner-occupied and being updated properly rather than rented between tenants, the briefs here are usually about the finish. Hand-made zellige, a herringbone, or a full-height panel behind the range that becomes the thing the room is built around.

Eighty-one percent of East Hampton's homes are detached houses on their own lots, and 45 percent of them were built in 1980 or later. The kitchens in those houses tend to have the same problem. A wall built for cabinets, then cabinets taken out, then something else put in. The wall behind it was never straightened and it is not plumb.

Not sure how much of this your home needs? Start here: how to choose a grout color that ages well It takes five minutes and saves guessing.

In East Hampton we install subway, herringbone, chevron, zellige, glass and stone mosaic backsplash tile, on a running bond, stacked, herringbone or chevron layout, with outlet cuts cut flush.

Before the first tile goes up

Is the wall actually flat?

We check across the whole run with a straightedge, not at one spot. High spots get knocked down and low ones filled so the first course has something straight to sit on. This is the step that decides whether the finished job looks deliberate.

Where do the cuts go?

Around the window, the outlet, the range hood, the cabinet edges. On uneven tile we will reset a few pieces as we go rather than force them, because a chipped edge is the thing you see every single day.

What does it mean for your counters?

We cover the counters and the floor before anything comes off. If you have stone counters we work around them carefully: nick damage is the complaint we hear most from homeowners, and it is entirely avoidable.

Permits in East Hampton

Does this work need a permit?

Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kitchen Backsplash Installation in East Hampton: Questions

No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.

Most are one to two working days. A full-height slab-look panel behind a range takes longer because there is more material, more cuts and more cure time before anything can be hung on it.

No. Tiling is finish work with no structural changes or alterations, which is exempt under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code. If the project also moves a sink drain or adds an outlet, that work is permitted separately by the tradesperson doing it through the Town of East Hampton Building Department, 1 Community Drive, 860-267-9601, applications online through PermitLink.

The wall is the deciding factor, not the style. Once the wall is straight you can run anything from a stacked bond to a herringbone. On a wall that has been patched around three generations of cabinets we will usually steer you toward a format that forgives a little unevenness, because the alternative is spending money on tile that shows every wave in the plaster.

1-year written workmanship warranty, same as all our work. Dmtilellc is a CT registered home improvement contractor, HIC #0706534, and insured. Free written estimates.

Sometimes. If the tile underneath is well bonded and the wall behind it is solid, we can go over the top, which saves you the demolition. If the old tile moves when you tap it, or the wall is hollow behind it, tiling over it just locks the problem in. We tell you which one yours is before we quote.
