Shower Waterproofing in Cromwell, CT
Waterproofed, flood-tested showers in Cromwell, for the 1970s and 80s colonials that make up nearly half the town, and the townhouse condos where the shower sits over a neighbor.
Shower waterproofing in Cromwell
Cromwell's homes were put up around 1976, so where a shower is taken apart for waterproofing the slab and the framing are usually from that era.
Cromwell's ground shows 123 map units in hydrologic group C and 189 in group A, and where the waterproofing goes down the soil usually sets the base.
The January normal at the nearest station is 27.1 degrees, and where a shower is opened on a cold slab the membrane is usually detailed first.
FEMA maps 17 zone A polygons and 75 zone AE inside Cromwell, and where a shower is opened on that ground the drain is usually planned first.
Where a Cromwell shower is stripped for waterproofing, the second floor of Town Hall is where the work is permitted.
Where a shower in Cromwell is opened for waterproofing, the trip from our base is about 15 minutes, and the pan and the wall are usually priced together.

Daniel did some tile work for me and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Absolutely amazing work and craftsmanship. He showed up on time, was very professional throughout the whole job, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he takes pride in his work and pays attention to the little details. Good, reliable contractors aren’t always easy to find, and Daniel is definitely one of them. The quality of the work was excellent, everything was done right, and he was worth every penny. I will definitely use him again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality tile work. Highly recommend! Daniel, thank you so much for getting the job done on short notice.

Cromwell showers: the 1970s pan has reached the end of its life
The primary-bath stall in a 1970s or 80s Cromwell house, and more than four in ten Cromwell houses are from those two decades, sits on a mortar pan over a PVC or CPE liner, usually without a pre-slope, with mastic-set four-by-four tile on greenboard above it. Those showers are decades old now, and the signs of a spent pan are consistent: grout that never stays put at the floor line, a musty smell, soft drywall on the other side of the wall, sometimes a stain on the ceiling below.
Because Cromwell has more townhouse condos than most towns we serve, a fair share of those tired showers sit above another owner's ceiling. We rebuild the wet area as a sealed system (pan removed to the subfloor, a new pre-sloped pan bonded to a new drain flange, membrane on the walls and out onto the floor, a twenty-four-hour flood test with the neighbor informed) before the tile goes on. Cromwell is fifteen minutes from our base.
Not sure how much of this your home needs? Start here: the five layers behind a shower that lasts It takes five minutes and saves guessing.
In Cromwell we waterproof every shower with a bonded system: Schluter-KERDI membrane, pre-sloped pans, curbs and a flood test before a single tile goes down.

What we check in a Cromwell shower before quoting
Greenboard and mastic
The 1970s wall build was moisture-resistant drywall and mastic. Neither is waterproof. The walls come out to the studs and are rebuilt with cement board and a bonded membrane.
The liner pan
We look for a pre-slope under the liner (usually there is none) and for a clamping drain that can accept a bonding flange. In most cases the drain assembly is replaced by the plumber while the floor is open.
Condo considerations
Association rules on hours and access, the unit below, and whether a sound mat is wanted under floor tile are all settled before demolition day.
Permits in Cromwell
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Shower Waterproofing in Cromwell: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Grout at the floor-to-wall joint that keeps cracking, a persistent musty smell, tiles at the bottom course that sound hollow, discolored or soft drywall on the back side of the shower wall, or any stain on the ceiling below. Any one of those is reason to have the pan looked at; two or more usually mean a rebuild.
Nearly always. A modern bonded membrane attaches to a bonding flange, and the old clamping drain rarely accepts one. The plumber swaps the assembly under a plumbing permit while the floor is open; the new pan is then bonded directly to it and flood-tested.
Not reliably. The wall membrane has to lap over the pan membrane to be continuous, and 1970s walls have no membrane to lap to. Redoing only the floor leaves the joint where most leaks start. We rebuild the wet area as one system.
Waterproofing and tile are exempt from a building permit under the state code. Drain and valve replacement is a plumbing permit obtained by your plumber from the Cromwell Building Department at 41 West Street; applications are downloaded from the town site and filed in person or by mail.
We build the pan, then go over it with a bonded waterproofing membrane such as a Schluter-KERDI style sheet or a liquid-applied one where the geometry calls for it. The membrane runs over the pan, up the walls, around the curb, and over every seam, corner and valve penetration, and we hold a twenty-four-hour flood test before any tile goes down. If a drop moves, we find it while it is still inexpensive to fix.
Only sometimes, and only when the old tile passes the checks: solidly bonded everywhere when you tap it, flat, and structurally sound, with enough give at the outlets, counters and doors to absorb the added thickness. When it fails any of those, tiling over it locks the problem in. On a wet area we almost always take it down to the substrate instead.
