Cromwell counters fail from underneath. We fix that first.
In Cromwell's 1970s and 80s raised ranches and colonials, that is the normal kitchen we walk into: laminate counters laid straight onto cabinet framing with no waterproofing at all.
So we build the part you never see. A counter sits on a base that is flat, square and waterproof. Cement backer board or exterior plywood, with a bonded membrane over it.
Full-Bed Thinset, Porcelain Slab or Stone: How the Surface Goes On
Then the surface goes on top: tile set in full-bed thinset, or a porcelain slab supported at the perimeter and mitred at the edge so it reads as one thick slab, or a stone or porcelain top you bought from a fabricator, which we fit and set.
Full-bed adhesive, never spot-set. It is slower and it costs more up front, and it is the difference between a counter that holds and one that cracks and has to be torn out.
What Decides How a Cromwell Counter Ages
Cromwell is fifteen minutes from our base on the Lincoln Street run in New Britain, and 82 percent of its homes are owner-occupied, which is why so many of these jobs are whole-kitchen refreshes rather than a single repair. Most Cromwell counters we install come as part of a kitchen the owner is already updating.
Most bad countertops we are called about did not fail on top. They failed because water got behind the surface, the base underneath went soft, and the tile or stone cracked later. Usually long after the installer moved on.
Not sure how much of this your home needs? Start here: how each tile material changes what the surface behind it can take It takes five minutes and saves guessing.
In Cromwell we set quartz, granite and marble countertop tile, on full-bed thinset with a detailed edge, working alongside your fabricator on the cut piece.

Before a countertop goes on in Cromwell
Is there a solid base under it?
Old laminate and post-formed counters are usually glued straight to cabinet framing or a thin skin of board. That flex is exactly what cracks tile and stone later. We open it up, level it, and build a base that will not move.
Where does the water go?
We bond a waterproofing membrane across the whole base, seal every cut-out for a sink, and leave a small movement gap at the wall filled with silicone instead of grout. Water wipes off the top instead of finding a path into the cabinets below.
Who cuts the material?
Tile, and a standard counter cut from tile or porcelain tile, we cut on site with a wet saw. Stone and large porcelain slab are never cut by us. You buy the slab or the cut-out top from a fabricator, yours or one we can point you to, already cut and finished. We bring it in, set it, and make the joints right.
Permits in Cromwell
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Kitchen Countertop Installation in Cromwell: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Sometimes, but we rarely recommend it. Old laminate usually sits in a bed of adhesive with no solid base underneath, and that is the kind of flex that cracks tile later. We would rather build a proper base and give you a counter that lasts. If there is already a sound tiled base we are happy to work with it.
A straight kitchen counter with no fabrication on site is usually a one to two day job including the waterproofing and cure time. Sink cut-outs, an island, or a mitred edge add time. You get a written schedule at the estimate so you know exactly which days we need your kitchen.
No. Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code, tiling and finish work not involving structural changes or alterations is exempt from a building permit. If your project also moves a sink drain or an outlet, that work is permitted separately by the plumber or electrician who does it, through the Town of Cromwell Building Department at Town Hall, 41 West Street. We tell you which parts of your scope need a permit before work starts.
One year of written workmanship warranty, the same on every job we do. Dmtilellc is a registered and insured Connecticut contractor, HIC #0706534, and we are rated five stars on Google. Estimates are free, and we will tell you honestly if a countertop is not a good fit for what we do.
You do. We do not sell granite, quartz, marble or any other stone, and we do not fabricate it. You buy the slab or the cut-out top from a fabricator. We build the waterproofed base, then set and install what you bought. If you want a tiled counter instead, that is our trade. You pick the tile with us at the estimate and we cut, set and grout it. Tell us where you are in the process and we will tell you honestly what still has to happen before we can install.
