Daniel did some tile work for me and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Absolutely amazing work and craftsmanship. He showed up on time, was very professional throughout the whole job, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he takes pride in his work and pays attention to the little details. Good, reliable contractors aren’t always easy to find, and Daniel is definitely one of them. The quality of the work was excellent, everything was done right, and he was worth every penny. I will definitely use him again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality tile work. Highly recommend! Daniel, thank you so much for getting the job done on short notice.

Custom Tile · Berlin
Custom tile for Berlin's single-family homes
Berlin is a town of people who own their homes and stay in them, which is why most of our custom work here is about making a specific room better rather than preparing a house for sale. The 1950s and 60s capes and ranches have small entries and mudrooms that were never tiled; the colonials built from the 1980s onward have big foyers, laundry rooms and family-room fireplaces with builder-grade surrounds that owners want to replace with something considered.
Typical Berlin requests: a herringbone or chevron porcelain entry that reads from the front door, a mudroom floor with a bench wall in a slip-resistant porcelain, a marble or slab-look fireplace surround, a laundry room with a waterproofed floor and a tiled utility wall. Each is drawn to the room, with the pattern centered on the door or the hearth and the cuts landing at the walls. Berlin is nine minutes from our base, so design visits and sample drop-offs are easy.
Not sure how much of this your home needs? Start here: what tiling around a fireplace actually involves It takes five minutes and saves guessing.
In Berlin we install custom mosaic, zellige, hexagon, penny and hand-painted tile, on one-off patterns and feature surfaces, set by hand.

Berlin custom-tile planning
Pattern scale to the room
A herringbone in a 4-by-6-foot cape entry wants a smaller plank than one in a two-story colonial foyer. We mock up the pattern at scale on paper and, if useful, dry-lay it on site.
Substrate for pattern work
Patterns magnify lippage. The floor is flattened to 1/8 inch in 10 feet and set on an uncoupling membrane, with a leveling system on planks and large tile.
Fireplace clearances
For a surround around an insert or gas unit we follow the manufacturer's clearance to combustibles and use a heat-tolerant thin-set on the hearth face.
Permits in Berlin
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Custom Tile Installation in Berlin: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Yes. A mudroom floor in a slip-resistant porcelain with a cove or tiled base, a waterproofing membrane under the floor if there is a utility sink or a dog-wash station, and a tiled wainscot behind the bench so wet coats and boots do not mark the drywall. We coordinate the carpentry for the bench and the tile so the wainscot lands on the bench line.
Herringbone uses rectangular planks offset at 90 degrees; chevron uses planks with mitered ends meeting in a point, which reads as clean arrows and costs more in tile and cutting. Both need a flat floor and careful layout to the door line. We show samples of each on your floor.
Usually. Sound brick can be tiled over after cleaning and a scratch coat or a cement-board wrap; a large-format porcelain or stone-look slab surround is a common upgrade in Berlin's 1980s and 1990s family rooms. We keep the required clearances around the firebox opening.
No. Tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work with no structural changes or alterations are exempt from a building permit under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code. Related plumbing (a mudroom sink, a floor drain) or electrical work is permitted by that licensed trade through the Berlin Building Department at 240 Kensington Road.
