Shower Tile Installation in Farmington, CT
Custom tiled showers in Farmington: from the antique houses of the Historic District and Unionville to the 1980s colonials that make up the town's biggest building stretch.
Shower tile in Farmington
2,565 of Farmington's housing units went up from 1980 to 1989, and where a shower is in one of them the pan is usually set on newer framing.
The Farmington Historic District covers Mountain Road, Main Street and Garden Street, and where a shower is in one of those houses the pan is usually measured first.
FEMA maps show 73 polygons in zone AE inside Farmington, and where a shower sits in that ground the waterproofing is usually detailed for it.
The utility that supplies Farmington draws from groundwater wells, and when a shower is set the line and the pressure are usually looked at first.
Farmington takes building permits online, and inspections are scheduled by phone at 860-675-2315, so where a shower needs one the filing is usually done first.
A Farmington shower sits about 19 minutes from our base, and the room is opened with the pan and the wall above usually quoted together.

Farmington showers: 1980s primary baths and 18th-century puzzles
The shower Farmington owners most want redone is the one that came with the 1980s primary suite, from the town's biggest building decade: a builder's stall with four-by-four tile, a mud pan and a framed glass door, next to a jetted tub on a tiled deck. Forty years on, the stall is too small and the pan is tired, and the tub deck is often given up to make room for a larger, better-built shower.
At the other end of town are the Historic District along Main Street and the mill-village streets of Unionville, with houses from the 1700s and 1800s where a shower has to be fitted into a room that was never plumbed for one. There the design work is about proportion and restraint, and the technical work is about a floor that was never level. We are about nineteen minutes from Farmington center and cover Unionville and the Route 4 corridor on the same trip.
We expect an out-of-level floor, plaster walls and framing that moves seasonally, and we build for it. A stiffened floor, a bonded membrane, silicone at every change of plane, and tile formats and layouts that do not fight the room. The shower should look like it belongs to the house.
Not sure how much of this your home needs? Start here: what actually goes behind shower tile It takes five minutes and saves guessing.
In Farmington we set porcelain, ceramic, mosaic, glass and natural stone shower tile, on an offset layout, stacked, brick-set or herringbone, over a bonded waterproofing system.

What we plan first in a Farmington shower
Reclaiming the tub deck
A 1980s tub deck is a framed box that can become shower floor. We check where the drain and supply lines run, whether the pump circuit needs to be removed by an electrician, and whether the window over the tub ends up inside the new wet area.
Pattern and format choices
Large-format porcelain with a book-matched look, vertical stack subway, or a marble-look with a mosaic floor. We build a layout drawing showing where every cut lands before the tile is ordered, so what you approve is what gets built.
Antique-house substrates
Wide-board subfloors and plaster walls in historic-district homes get a plywood layer, cement board and a bonded membrane; we set the tile to the room's true lines and use movement joints where the old frame will move.
Permits in Farmington
Does this work need a permit?
Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Shower Tile Installation in Farmington: Questions
No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.
Yes. It is the natural move in a 1980s Farmington primary bath. Removing the tub deck typically frees a 5-by-6-foot or larger footprint for a tiled shower with a bench and a linear drain. The plumber relocates the drain and valve under a plumbing permit while the floor is open; we build the pan, waterproof, flood-test and tile.
Yes. Large-format porcelain panels and 24×48 tiles need a very flat substrate (within an eighth of an inch over ten feet), a medium-bed mortar, back-buttering and a leveling system. We plan the vein direction and matching on a drawing before the tile is cut.
That is the whole job: build for a house that moves. The floor is stiffened and leveled, a plywood layer goes over the wide-board subfloor and cement board over the old plaster, a bonded membrane covers that, and silicone handles every change of plane. Movement joints go where the old framing will shift, and the tile format is chosen so the pattern suits the room rather than fights it.
Not for the tile. Connecticut's building code exempts tiling and finish work without structural change under the state exempt-work list (CGS 20-340(11)). Drain and valve changes are plumbing permits and lighting is an electrical permit, both filed online with the Farmington Building Division at 20 Monteith Drive by the licensed trade.
We build the pan, then go over it with a bonded waterproofing membrane such as a Schluter-KERDI style sheet or a liquid-applied one where the geometry calls for it. The membrane runs over the pan, up the walls, around the curb, and over every seam, corner and valve penetration, and we hold a twenty-four-hour flood test before any tile goes down. If a drop moves, we find it while it is still inexpensive to fix.
Only sometimes, and only when the old tile passes the checks: solidly bonded everywhere when you tap it, flat, and structurally sound, with enough give at the outlets, counters and doors to absorb the added thickness. When it fails any of those, tiling over it locks the problem in. On a wet area we almost always take it down to the substrate instead.
