Daniel did some tile work for me and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Absolutely amazing work and craftsmanship. He showed up on time, was very professional throughout the whole job, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he takes pride in his work and pays attention to the little details. Good, reliable contractors aren’t always easy to find, and Daniel is definitely one of them. The quality of the work was excellent, everything was done right, and he was worth every penny. I will definitely use him again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality tile work. Highly recommend! Daniel, thank you so much for getting the job done on short notice.

Glastonbury: custom tile in houses built to be lived in for decades

Glastonbury's houses are large, owner-occupied, and mostly built from the 1970s onward (the Curtisville and South Glastonbury colonials, the newer homes near Glastonbury Center), with an older stock along Main Street and condominium communities that include the converted J.B. Williams Soap Factory. Custom requests here run to the whole-house scale.

A large-format porcelain floor through a kitchen, family room and mudroom; a full-height feature wall behind a fireplace or television; a stone entry; a mudroom with a dog-wash station; a basement bar with a mosaic backsplash. The common threads are flatness, layout and transitions: planning a single grout grid across three rooms, keeping the pattern aligned through doorways, and landing the tile at hardwood without a step. Glastonbury is about twenty-eight minutes from our base, and we schedule work there in full-day blocks.

Not sure how much of this your home needs? Start here: what tiling around a fireplace actually involves It takes five minutes and saves guessing.

In Glastonbury we install custom mosaic, zellige, hexagon, penny and hand-painted tile, on one-off patterns and feature surfaces, set by hand.

Glastonbury custom planning

Multi-room layouts

A continuous tile grid through several rooms is set out from the most visible line, usually the kitchen island or the front door, and checked at every doorway before setting begins.

Long spans in newer homes

Open-plan 1980s and 1990s floors often have long joist spans or I-joists. We check deflection against L/360 (L/720 for stone) and add a second plywood layer where a large format calls for it.

Condo conversions

In buildings like the Soap Factory the substrates can be original mill floors or gypsum toppings; we identify the base, prime and membrane it correctly, and follow the association's rules.

Permits in Glastonbury

Does this work need a permit?

Under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code (§R105.2), tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work that involves no structural change is exempt from a building permit. Plumbing changes such as a new valve or a moved drain, and any electrical work, are permitted separately by the licensed plumber or electrician who performs them. We tell you which items in your scope apply before work starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Custom Tile Installation in Glastonbury: Questions

No. Daniel and his own crew do the tile work. We do not hand your job to a third-party installer, so the same people who set the tile are the ones in your house every day of the install, and you deal with one company from the estimate through the final clean-up.

Yes. The three rooms are measured as one plane, flattened with a self-leveling underlayment where needed, set on an uncoupling membrane, and laid out from one control line so the grout joints run true through every doorway. Movement joints are required over the control joints in the slab and at every change of plane, and the Tile Council of North America handbook puts interior movement joints at 20 to 25 feet in each direction. We run them at the doorways, where the joint hides in the grout pattern.

Yes, behind fireplaces, televisions, freestanding tubs and in stairwells. The wall is flattened first, the layout drawn for vein direction and seam placement, and the panels set with a medium-bed mortar and a leveling system. Around a fireplace we keep the manufacturer's clearances and use a heat-tolerant setting material.

A waterproofed, sloped floor area draining to a floor drain or a raised basin, tiled walls to a height that handles spray, a hand shower, and a slip-resistant porcelain floor throughout. The plumbing is permitted work for your plumber through the Town of Glastonbury's online system; we build the waterproofing and tile around it.

No. Tiling and similar finish work not involving structural changes or alterations is exempt under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code. Glastonbury permits plumbing, electrical and HVAC work separately and online only (OpenGov), so any drain, sink or lighting in the project is filed by that trade. Structural stiffening of a floor would also be permitted work; we advise before it is done.
